Ghyston is a Bristol-based software development company named after the industrious Bristol Giant. Ghyston works across all industry sectors, using different technologies to produce bespoke software projects for ambitious companies.

Their friendly team of passionate problem-solvers, creative thinkers, and tech geniuses love to be challenged with complex problems and apply their innovative knowledge to develop a tailored solution.

We spoke with Rich New, Client Services Director, to ask how they managed to put sustainability at the core of their operations.

The contextA carbon footprint that needed improving

Before hearing about Spherics, Ghyston was already quite far along in our sustainability journey compared to many of our peers. We were using another platform to measure our footprint, but the more reporting we did, the more we learned about the different methodologies used to calculate carbon - and the discrepancies between them.

We’ve always been thirsty to achieve the best standards for our environmental reporting, and our desire to improve prompted us to look at other offerings. We were drawn to Spherics by their open and collaborative principles. It was clear from the start that they are truly focused on helping businesses engage with the latest science-based standards and that transparency was exactly what we were looking for.

Now, Spherics has become a trusted point of authority to us. It’s simple: they provide us with standard-compliant reporting information we can trust, quickly and easily.

The challenge they facedHow to bring standard-compliant measurement into a CSR strategy

During lockdown we decided to reinvent and refresh our CSR strategy focusing on four pillars of workplace, marketplace, community and environment. As a component of environment, we set out to understand our carbon footprint and how we could measure our impact.

After speaking to consultants, running spreadsheets and having an overwhelming feeling of being lost without any further understanding, I was pointed in the direction of Spherics and their mission to help businesses measure and reduce their carbon footprint. Game changer.

The Spherics solutionAlignment with the GHG protocol

By automating an initial carbon footprint based on accounting data, Spherics has come up with an ingenious way of achieving reliable, evidence-based reporting at scale. Their data model has tiers that allow us to work with the information and the time we have available in our busy weeks.

Spherics uses technology to do much of the heavy lifting, without sacrificing compatibility with key standards, such as the GHG Protocol. It’s a peace of mind that gets us closer to our objective of understanding our carbon footprint and gives us more time and energy to focus on measurable actions.

I’ve already started using the insights to drive informed discussions across the business. We know we’re not perfect but we now at least know where to start.

The ResultA trusted carbon footprint to drive business decisions

Spherics are helping Ghyston to have informed, evidence-based conversations around sustainability and the impact of business decisions.

We're keen to engage more deeply with clients and suppliers on climate issues and having a reliable carbon tracking tool in place is a great step in the right direction for us.

The Spherics data has allowed us to easily calculate what it would take for us to become carbon neutral and will be central to our strategy to become net zero over the next few years.
