The climate emergency is the greatest threat humanity has ever faced. Collaboration is no longer optional, it is essential. Businesses must accelerate decarbonisation to meet the UK Government's 2050 net zero target and adoption of the Paris Agreement.
Operating with limited time and money available to develop effective sustainability initiatives, businesses lack the support to understand and act on their carbon emissions. Existing solutions are mostly consultancy-based, time-consuming and expensive. Other quick ‘calculators’ often ignore supply-chain emissions completely. Neither is fit to meet the needs of the climate crisis at scale.
Spherics’ exists to bridge the gap between the science-based requirements to avert climate disaster and the day-to-day realities of running a business. Coming with experience of running small businesses themselves, our founding team recognised that the resources aren’t always available to develop effective sustainability initiatives.
The name ‘Spherics’ originated from the thing we are setting out to eliminate - harmful human-made atmospheric emissions that contribute to climate change. The precious, fragile layer of gases that encompasses our planet supports all life on Earth, so we think it’s worth putting our name to protecting.
Spherics also speaks to circularity and the elegant patterns emerging from living systems that inspire us to go to work every day.
Our founding & leadership team has cross-sector experience in running successful businesses & non-profit organisations. We recognised that the resources aren’t always available to develop effective sustainability initiatives. Often what would seem the most appropriate strategy, or initiative, actually has a negligible reductive impact, or in some cases can actually make things worse.
Our response was to create a platform that makes it easy and affordable for as many businesses as possible to reduce their environmental impact. We’ve been busy developing our product over the last few years and during this time we’ve seen a wave of positive action, from the change in public opinion to genuine and robust regulation from governments. There is a heck of a long way to go if we are to slow down climate change to safe levels for the survival of our species, wildlife and the planet, but we’re confident that with determined collaborative action, we can make a difference.
We know they’re ambitious, they’re good at solving problems, and they all started with a dream of something better – for themselves, and their families
We don’t think any of them go to work every day trying to make the world a worse place than when they found it.
And yet, many businesses profit at the expense of our climate and our planet’s natural resources. It’s the system we live in, and – most of the time - it’s just how it is.
But it doesn’t have to be.
We don’t think doing business should mean doing harm. Quite the opposite, in fact.
Today, improving a business’ environmental impact is complex, time consuming and expensive.
What if it was easy, quick and ended up saving money instead?
That’s what we do.
We’ve been recognised as the best early-stage climate tech in the UK by Tech Nation, winning the Rising Stars “Net-Zero” Award in 2021. This year we also join 31 of the UK's most promising climate tech companies driving down global emissions, in Tech Nation's acclaimed Net Zero 2.0 cohort. In 2020, we were awarded grant funding through Innovate UK’s Sustainable Innovation Fund.
Spherics has Pending B Corp status and as signatories of the ‘Better Business Act’ have committed to advancing the interests of shareholders, alongside the wider needs of society and the environment. As such, we promise to publicly report annually on how we balance people, planet and profit.
At Spherics, we recognise that the climate emergency poses a devastating threat to the economy, nature and society at large. That’s why we’re committed to achieving science-based net zero emissions by 2022. This means limiting our company’s carbon footprint in line with keeping global warming to below 1.5°C.
